How to Attract Toxic Men . . . AND Keep Them Interested!
O
ne of the pitfalls of working in a male-dominated industry is that there are single men around all the time. In the early days of doing stand-up especially you spend hours together on trains, in green rooms, at festivals, and they become your close intimate circle of friends. Too much to drink one night and, bam, youâve sucked off another colleague. Because of my responsibilities to Violet, I was usually rushing home and I certainly wasnât getting hammered, so I avoided the spontaneity of any one-night stands but that didnât stop me from accidentally falling in love with my friends now and then. My relationships are like most female homicides: I already knew the guy.
I moved swiftly along into a new relationship, this time with The Sketch Actor, who I got close to â you guessed it â after several months of friendship that escalated one night at a festival gig. The Sketch Actor, despite being consumed by hatred for Russell Brand, looked a bit and dressed A LOT like Russell Brand. That part was confusing. He wore more skull rings than he had fingers for, the tightest British trousers Iâd ever seen and torn-up vests that always showed his nipples. My mother adored him. Just kidding; she hated him like she hated the others. I introduced them on a video chat once and she later remarked that he was the filthiest-looking man sheâd ever seen and she found it disrespectful that he hadnât bothered putting any clothes on and conducted the chat in his underwear.
I thought he was funny and sweet so I quite liked him until we went on holiday. For a start, I never, ever wanted to take a vacation in the first place. If Violet was with her dad for a weekend or for Christmas, my preference was always to catch up on sleep or work by myself. It felt very unnatural to be without her and certainly wasnât something that I wanted to celebrate. Also, when youâre freelance, as I considered myself to be, itâs prudent to be available for any last-minute jobs that might be offered to you. Being home was my priority but I could see how this made me a bad partner, and I acknowledged that other women my age could just pick up and travel, or, at the very least, show their boyfriends the undivided attention they craved in a new relationship. I added my inadequacy as a girlfriend to the growing stink of shame that clung to me and reluctantly agreed to spend New Yearâs Eve with him in Morocco. I made a speech about how irresponsible it was for a single mother to spend money on a holiday, so he compromised by picking somewhere very affordable and paying for half of my share. Still, everything in my being told me not to go.
On our first night abroad, I experienced what I can only describe as a panic attack and it never really went away during the entire trip.
